FTP for ES 555

Various readings (pdf files) and digital datasets will be supplied for this course. These items are available for downloading to student computers via FTP (file transport protocol). Instructions below apply to students working in the ESU Geospatial Analysis Laboratory. Distance-learning students may have to modify these procedures slightly to accommodate their own computer systems. Students should utilize software designed specifically for FTP (not a web browser).

FTP Instructions

  1. Select FTP icon from the main screen or Internet menu box.

  2. Under "profile name" select the WS_FTP32 option.

  3. For "host name/address" enter academic.emporia.edu and leave "host type" as automatic detect.

  4. The "user ID" is student. Contact your instructor for the appropriate password.

  5. Next click on the "Startup" tab. For "initial remote host directory" fill in /home/aberjame/datasets/airphoto/, and for "initial local directory" fill in c:/student/pqr (or d:/student/pqr), where "pqr" is the name of your student directory.

  6. Click "OK" and wait for the FTP connection to be established.

  7. Select files to copy from the remote host to the local PC, and click the arrow button to transfer files. Do not attempt to copy any files from your computer to the FTP host computer.

Note: For students who need FTP software, FileZilla is recommended. Download the free FileZilla client software appropriate for your computer operating system.
