Within the past decade, geographic information system (GIS), remote sensing, and related techniques have been applied to virtually all mapping and cartographic subjects for cultural, physical, biological, and military features. The volume of GIS research and usage is now so great as to defy complete coverage in a brief lecture. Instead, several examples are presented below to provide case histories of GIS in action. These examples are drawn primarily from the natural sciences in order to demonstrate the diversity of applications.
