Isla Isabela, western Galapagos: NASA JSC image, STS059(S)085, 04/18/94. L-band (HH)
radar image acquired with the Spaceborne Imaging Radar system from the space shuttle
Endeavour. Radar image is draped over a digital elevation model to create a 3-D
perspective view of roughly 60 by 75 km. Rough lava flows show as bright features; smoother
ash deposits and pahoehoe flows are dark. The Galapagos volcanoes are developed over a hot
spot derived from beneath the oceanic lithosphere.
