What are the Osage Cuestas?

The Osage Cuestas is the name of a physiographic region located in east-central Kansas. The region lines the Kansas River, and extends south to the border of Oklahoma. The area gets its name from the coal rich escarpments that were extensively mined in Osage County during the late 1800's. What Is So Special About This Area?



This area is important for a number of reasons. It has a warm and (relatively) wet climate, giving the soils of the Osage Cuestas a particular well leg up. These factor well into various farmland, agraculture, and woodland uses for the area.
