FTP of PDF Files

Selected Scientific American articles will be supplied in pdf format via FTP (file transport protocol). These files were prepared by scanning original articles and converting images into pdf files, which are suitable for on-screen viewing or printing with Adobe Acrobat. Most pdf files are 1½ to 3 megabytes in size. The files are identified by last name of the author for each article.

Instructions below apply to students working in the ESU Geospatial Analysis Laboratory. Distance-learning students need FTP software and may have to modify these procedures slightly to accomodate their own computer systems.

FTP Instructions

  1. Select FTP icon from the main screen or Internet menu box.

  2. Under "profile name" select the WS_FTP32 option.

  3. For "host name/address" enter academic.emporia.edu and leave "host type" as automatic detect.

  4. The "user ID" is student. Contact your instructor for the appropriate password.

  5. Next click on the "Startup" tab. For "initial remote host directory" fill in /home/aberjame/datasets/tectonic/, and for "initial local directory" fill in c:/student/pqr (or d:/student/pqr), where "pqr" is the name of your student directory.

  6. Click "OK" and wait for the FTP connection to be established.

  7. Select files to copy from the remote host to the local PC, and click the arrow button to transfer files. Do not attempt to copy any files from your computer to the FTP host computer.
Note: Some distance-learning students may experience difficulty for FTPing large files. The problem apparently has to do with certain FTP software or Internet providers, in which large files are sometimes truncated. Note size of original files and compare to the files received. If you have this problem, please contact your instructor for technical assistance.
