A Pathfinder: Sources for Sociology Faculty and Students

Taking my lead from The Social Sciences: A Cross-Disciplinary Guide to Selected Sources (Herron, 2002), I have created a bibliography for students of sociology. However, my bibliography will be more tightly focused than the annotated bibliography provided by Zabel and Avery (2002). This resource list is designed to aid a sociology professor who has requested a list of sociological resources—in a variety of formats and sub-fields—that her/his students might make use of in her/his Introduction to Sociology course at an academic institution and possibly other future undergraduate courses. Since I have full access to all the resources available in Emporia State University’s William Allen White University Library (library.emporia.edu) I have chosen to focus the bibliography on information that is available through White Library, as well as some information that is openly available on the internet. Many of the resources listed on this bibliography were cited by Zabel and Avery (2002), but a good proportion of the others were selected based on their availability, and the desire the provide a variety of resources in different sociological subfields and various formats, to suit the preferences and needs of a variety of students with different assignments and information needs.

Because, as Zabel and Avery (2002) point out, sociologists tend to predominantly cite literature that has been published in the past ten years. With this in mind and the fact that sociological literature can become dated quite easily, this bibliography focuses on literature that has been published within the past fifteen to twenty years. However, classics texts or theoretical works are included because they are not subject to the same standards of currency as other works in the discipline.

The bibliography is arranged first by subfield, and then by the format type of the items. I have endeavored to include several different formats, and materials that cover different elements of the given subfields, for each of these lists. Since the entire bibliography was premised on the collection of the William Allen White Library at Emporia State University, the list reflects both the strengths and the weaknesses of that collection. I designed the bibliography so that the entire list could be posted on a website as one item, or each page (covering a different subfield) could be posted separately. Additionally, each page could be printed out and given out to students as a handout. In other words, the bibliography was designed to be as flexible as possible, so that it could be used for multiple purposes, including for students in courses other than Introduction to Sociology.
