Information Transfer in the Disciplines and
The Role of Library Liaisons

Similarities exist in information transfer from country to country, discipline to discipline, task to task, and people to people. Differences also exist among cultures, subjects, tasks, and people, and it is these differences that must be revealed in order to communicate information not just transfer it. Academic libraries facilitate the information transfer process and support the educational mission of universities, when librarians assist faculty in teaching goals. This aid can take many forms from basic services of reference, interlibrary loan, and course reserve, but there is merit in going beyond basic services and the custodial duties of traditional collection management (Owusu-Ansah, 2001). Creating specialized services and valued collection development begins with an understanding of academic disciplines and communicating directly with faculty.

This lecture went on to discuss library liaison and instructional services and resources offered in academic libraries. My course was first offered for university credit in the spring 2007 semester. Visit Course Schedule and Syllabi to see when it will be taught again for ESU, slim.emporia.edu/program/syllabus/syllabus.htm. Specifically, this course was designed to introduce students to the general nature of questions and guiding paradigms of information transfer and communication within academic disciplines using an international experience for geoscientists as an example. If you are interested in this course, please contact Dr. Aber at saber@emporia.edu.
