Selection and Acquistion: A Guide Through the Labyrinth of Spatial Data

Sample Introduction

The purpose of this lecture is to explore map collection development or the selection and acquisition of maps and supporting cartographic materials needed to build a viable map and spatial data collection. Collection development is the heart of any library, and visual and spatial data complement the print and oral information contained within a library. Formal recognition of map and image collections demonstrates that librarians understand that one of the ways people navigate life is through the visualization of information and interpretation of spatial data.

Map librarians are better able to make wise decisions regarding collection development when they understand content area and assess the current and potential client pool. Larsgaard (1998) suggested librarians observe users and use patterns and formulate a user profile that is specific to a library setting (p. 1-2). Tracking reference inquiries and assessing proactive reference services will help to acquire this information. However, learning to assess and anticipate your library community's needs is beyond the scope of this course, a good site to visit as an introduction is by Dr. Sandra Hirsh and others, Community Needs Assessment, http://www.lib.az.us/cdt/commneeds.htm. Knowledge gained from this and other readings and courses on assessment should be applied to map librarianship. While the foundation for sound collection development policy involves a realistic and honest assessment of current and potential clients, other factors may drive collection development decisions.
