Introduction
One approach to making our study of management more focused and more interesting will be for each of us to recognize and share information about the services we each like and use. This project will serve several other functions, as well:
1. We will each get to know each other a little better.
2. It is a first opportunity to create a free-standing web page - preparing to do others during the term.
3. It will locate and record a number of useful web sites that we can each use again, from time to time.
Read the entire WebQuest document before beginning, please. Thank you.
(Re-Read the last sentence!)
Come back and reread, from time to time, when you have questions!
Task
Create a "My Favorite Services" web page by which you will learn to create:
1. Internal Links - that is, links within a web page
2. External Links - links to web sites outside the current web page
3. Inserted Graphics (from whatever source, and how to gather them
4. Format of Web Page (including colors and background)
5. Courtesy Information that should be included on each web page you create.
You will send the web page you create to the instructor
to be posted with a link off the Class Home Page so that fellow students
can review and comment on the page as well as use it for reference in locating
web page sites of interest.
1. You may want to make some of your own categories, but, here are some to get you started (pick three to use for your first assignment):
Eating Establishments
Entertainment
Book Stores
Personal Services
Auto Services
Retail Stores
Places I have Worked
2. You will want to use an Editor and these helpful hints on web pages:
a. Use an editor, such as Netscape Gold3, Composer with Netscape Communicator, or Other. (I prefer that you please DO NOT USE Microsoft Office 97 or Word for this WebQuest - unless you talk to me first, if you must).
b. With an editor, use the blank page option, so you can add what you want. You can choose your font size and style easily. Be sure to save your work regularly - as a .htm file, on PC [as a .html file, on MAC]. For your first assignment, please use your (not more than eight digits) last name (or userid based on last name). Thank you.
3. Think Ahead. For instance, if you have your categories, copy them to your blank twice, once for the section headings, once for the "menu" use.
4. Internal Links. With your "menu" and "section headings" in place, you are now ready to make internal links from the menu items to their corresponding section headings. We start with the destination (section headings), and make "targets" for the link, using the "Target" button on the Editor.
Insert "targets" using the first few letters of the section
headings first.
Then, go to your menu items. Select (highlight with your
mouse) the first menu item. Click on the "Link" button of the Editor. Notice
that your "targets" are already listed in the "link dialogue box." Click
on the correct target for the menu item you selected. That target name
with an # in front of it will appear on the link line. Click OK and you
have created an internal link between the menu item and the corresponding
section heading. Do the same for each menu item/section heading.
5. External Links. Here you
want to create a link on your web page to an Internet site somewhere. You
must know that URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to do that. The URL is the
address of the web site - be sure you have the complete address - that
is, there should be no ... in the middle of it - that means you are missing
something, and, the link will not work.
External links (to URLs) will start with "http://"something.
You must put this heading in (using the editor) for the external links
to work (even though it may not be necessary in your browser!). You may
use any text (or inserted image) as your link. In our example (below) we
first used the URL itself. Select (highlight) the text (or image) you want
to use as your link. Click the "Link" button. Insert the URL on the link
link (copy and paste or type it in - copy and paste should be more accurate).
Click OK. Your text should change color and me underlined to indicate the
link is active. You have created an External Link.
[To see your links as active links - save your document, switch to browser from the editor.]
6. Insert Graphics. You can add images using the image button. You must first save a copy of the image, locally, on your disk. Be sure to send a copy of any image you use with your web page file, as an attachment to e-mail. Using the Internet Browser to send e-mail is recommended. Just click on the link to the Instructor and the "e-mail to:" box will pop up, already filled in correctly.
7. Format your Page.
a. Add bold face type and centering, as desired,
to increase the attractiveness of your page.
b. You can also add
background color or image and change the color
of your text, if you wish. Just be sure to use compatible colors
that read easily (light on dark, dark on light, etc.). (under Format or
Document on menu bar)
8. Courtesy Information: Close your page with the date created (and/or last date updated) and the "link" to use for return e-mail to you is "mailto:userid@domainname" as shown in the sample format.
9. Use the various search engines and your browser to
find web sites you want to use. Don't forget to search local community
sites, Chamber of Commerce, newspaper, etc. for local companies as well
as national and international service providers. Use the "copy and paste"
function whenever you can so that you do not make spelling errors. Be aware
that if you print out a page, it may not have a complete URL on the copy.
Copy and paste the URL into a notepad or web page directly so that you
have it complete and correct.
Process
1. Identify a list of services you use during a day, a week, a month, a year of your life. Write them down in a list, add to the list as you remember additional services you use.
2. Sort the items on your list into four-to-six categories that are meaningful to you. Some examples are available, see Resources. (Use three for WebQuest assignments)
3. Create a web page (see Resources;
also, sample format) titled:
"My Favorite Services - Your Name"
(put your own name in place of Your Name, of course)
with section titles, your categories, as developed in 2. above. Make a
list of these headings as a menu of choices, at the beginning of your page,
linked to each of the sections. Be sure to include your e-mail address
and the date you last updated the page, at the end of the page. Feel free
to use appropriate icons and images as you feel appropriate.
(For assignments, please limit icons and images to 3-5, total, please)
4. Under each section title you have chosen, give us the
name of the business providing the service, a web site address (linked
to the site), and a brief description of the service available (in perhaps)
one or two sentences. There may be three-to-five sites for each category/section.
Example:
Apple Computer
URL: http://www.apple.com
I get my computer equipment from Apple. By watching their
web site, I can know what is available and when it is available.
5. When completed, send the web page (in .htm or .html
format) file, along with any images files used, to
the instructor, as an attachment to an e-mail message.
Conclusion
When every one has their pages posted, each person should
go to the Class Home Page and click to the individual pages for each of
the other students (as well as your own) and review what they have done.
You may wish to refer to some of the sites you see, later, as you do other
assignments during the term.
Eating Establishments
Pizza Hut
URL: http://www.pizzahut.com/
You can eat in, carry out or get delivery of pizza, pasta and your
choice of favorite goodies.
Just watch out for Sicilian.....
